Treatment Processes and Technologies for Decolourization and COD Removal of Distillery Spent Wash: A Review

چکیده
Most of distilleries in India use biomethanation process to treat the spent wash generated during the alcohol process, to ensure the effective treatment all distillery industries follow 13 fold dilutions due to which tremendous amount of spent wash is generated. 8 -15 l of spent wash was generated during 1 l of alcohol, thus distillery industries consume more water and produce waste water on a large scale. Ethanol produced in a distillery industries are around 8 to 15 % by volume, it means about 85 to 92 % waste water contain by volume. Spent wash is the dark brown viscous liquid highly putrid, having very high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Spent wash contain 2% melanoidin which is form by maillard reaction between amino acid and sugar, melanoidin having high molecular weight and cannot be degradable easily. This paper present an overview of pollution problem caused by distillery spent wash, this paper also summaries number of technologies such as physico-chemical treatment, biological treatment , their status , application and limitations, also includes further investigation for future study have been discussed.

Effect of initial pH on biodegradation of distillery wastewater by batch process using anaerobic mixed consortia
Biodegradation of distillery wastewater is dependent on initial pH. In this present research, the effect of initial pH from 5.0 to 6.5 on biodegradation of distillery wastewater using anaerobic mixed consortia by batch process was investigated. The parameters like chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, oxidation reduction potential (ORP), final pH, total phenol content, total protein ...
متن کاملOptimization of Electrochemical Treatment Process Conditions for Distillery Effluent Using Response Surface Methodology
Distillery industry is recognized as one of the most polluting industries in India with a large amount of annual effluent production. In this present study, the optimization of electrochemical treatment process variables was reported to treat the color and COD of distillery spent wash using Ti/Pt as an anode in a batch mode. Process variables such as pH, current density, electrolysis time, and ...

Thin-film composite nano-filtration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes based NF followed by ROpilot plant at a feed pressure of 20 atm.and flow rate of 10 L/min. was used to remove colour, total dissolved solid (TDS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of distillery spent wash. NF was found to be effective for high rejection of TDS, colour and COD by 85%, 99% and 95%, respectively. Furthermor...

Approximately 400 KL of spent wash or vinasse per annum is generated at an average COD concentration of 100,000 mg/l, by over 250 distilleries in India. There is an urgent need to develop, assess and use ecofriendly methods for the disposal of this high strength wastewater. Therefore, an attempt was made to investigate a few aspects of anaerobic digestion of spent wash collected from a distille...
متن کاملRemoval of melanoidin present in distillery effluent as a major colorant: a review.
Effluent originating from distilleries contain large amount of dark brown coloured wastewater called molasses spent wash (MSW). This MSW is the unwanted residual liquid waste to dispose because of low pH, high temperature, dark brown colour, high ash content, unpleasant odour and high percentage of organic and inorganic matter. Dark brown colour of MSW is due to the presence of melanoidin pigme...
